Our food system is cooked.
In the face of food insecurity, a cost of living crisis, a climate emergency, growing geopolitical instability and some of the worst food-related health burdens in the developed world… a domestic food system that feeds New Zealanders well is more important than ever.
Help us tell the people with the power that we demand action to create better food future for our people, our farmers, growers, fishers, food producers and future generations of New Zealanders.
We need your voice to help get us out of this pickle.
Our relationship with food is one of the most important we have. The way we cook and eat, the way we feed ourselves and the people around us, and where our food comes from provides a deep vision into our society and how it works. Right now, we’re blundering.
Aotearoa New Zealand has a celebrated reputation as world leaders in food and beverage exports. But the lack of ambition and leadership in protecting our local food security and sovereignty undermines the future health, wellbeing and livelihoods of New Zealanders. And it is beginning to erode trust in our export offering too.
It’s time for a big, brave push to protect New Zealanders’ access to the incredible food we produce here.

The Opportunity
The food system is too big and complex to pretend that there is a magic solution to the challenges we face. The only way forward is to take a big picture, systems-thinking approach to the challenge, and implement a values-based national food framework that keeps us on track. One that includes farmers, growers, fishers and food producers, industry bodies, mana whenua, government departments, health promoters and food security advocates, with the ambitious goal of improving our connection to locally grown food.
We need to tell those in charge that there is appetite for a plan that protects and supports New Zealanders’ access to our fantastic, locally produced food.
Our future food system must better serve New Zealanders and their communities, while understanding the role it plays within our natural world. Independent oversight of our food system is needed so that the food system, its producers and regulators are held to account. This oversight is essential to the wellbeing of future generations through food security and sovereignty, while protecting the welfare of people, animals and our planet. It’s not too much to ask.
